From Icon to Iconoclasm, From Word to Image, From Symbol to Allegory

Author: Dorota Semenowicz

Persian Edition: February 2018 / Bahman 1396

This book examines Romeo Castellucci’s theatrical project through the ethical and aesthetic framework shaped by his reflection on the nature of the image. It asks why a director whose fundamental artistic tool is the image would reject the notion as a key conceptual category. Rooted in Castellucci’s conscious distancing from iconoclasm in the 1980s, this position is often articulated through the terms “symbol,” “form,” and “idea.”

As the first international publication to present Castellucci’s work from both historical and theoretical perspectives, the book places his own discourse in dialogue with concepts that have shaped his artistic project. Tracing the evolution of his theatre from icon to iconoclasm, from word to image, and from symbol to allegory, it examines experimental approaches to staging alongside the idea of an “emotional wave” as an animating principle of Castellucci’s theatre.

The Persian edition was translated by Mehdi Mashhour and Sara Rasouli and published by Mah o Khorsid Publication in Bahman 1396 (February 2018)
