In August 2016, The Door was presented at the 20th International Fringe Festival in New York City.

Written and directed by Mehdi Mashhour and presented by Iran Saye Theatre, the production was the first Iranian play to take part in FringeNYC. Coming to New York from Tehran, The Door continued its exploration of immigration through the experiences of two Middle Eastern women who find themselves between the desire to leave and the uncertainty of staying.

The performance uses movement, speech, music and sound to construct a fragmented world in which the boundaries between departure and return, home and elsewhere, are constantly shifting.

The New York presentation followed the production’s participation in the 9th International Theatre Festival in Donzdorf, Germany, in 2015.

For Iran Saye Theatre, FringeNYC became an important stage in the international life of The Door, bringing the production into a new cultural and theatrical context while keeping its original language of movement, sound and physical performance.

The Door was presented at 64E Mainstage in New York’s East Village from August 21 to 27, 2016.
