Iran Saye Theatre Group proudly presents “Headlock,” our latest groundbreaking production staged in Tehran. Performed under the weight of the ongoing war and tensions between Iran and Israel, this performance stands as a powerful testament to the resilience of art and its ability to inspire and heal in times of crisis. Written and directed by Mehdi Mashhour, “Headlock” explores the lives of two teenage Iranian female wrestlers, delving into themes of resilience, identity, and societal expectations. Inspired by Ruby Rae Spiegel’s play Dry Land, “Headlock” reimagines these themes within a distinctly Iranian context, offering a fresh and impactful theatrical experience that shines through the shadows of war.

“Headlock” tells the story of two teenage girls navigating the challenges of pursuing wrestling—a traditionally male-dominated sport—in contemporary Iran. Through a blend of physical performance, emotional depth, and symbolic storytelling, the production examines their struggles, aspirations, and the societal pressures they face. This bold new work pushes the boundaries of Iranian theatre by combining experimental staging with a narrative rooted in local culture and universal themes of youth and empowerment.

The production is a collaborative effort, featuring a talented team:

  • Writer and Director: Mehdi Mashhour

  • Directorial Consultant: Benyamin Esbati

  • Actors: Farnoush Naderpour, Farsa PourHasan

  • Assistant Directors: Narges Sadeghian, Dorsa Azimi

  • Puppeteer: Parsa Yousef

  • Dramaturg: Sara Rasouli Nejad

  • With the accompaniment of: Hojat Salimi, Dana Asareh

Drawing inspiration from Dry Land by Ruby Rae Spiegel, “Headlock” adapts the raw emotional intensity of the original play to reflect the unique experiences of young Iranian women. The production uses wrestling as a metaphor for personal and societal struggles, creating a visceral and thought-provoking experience for audiences. This marks a significant step for Iran Saye Theatre Group in exploring new narratives and experimental forms in Iranian theatre.

“Headlock” is currently being performed in Tehran, with plans for future shows and potential international tours. Follow our social media channels for updates on performance dates, behind-the-scenes content, and opportunities to engage with this exciting project.
