by cooperation with Saye Theatre: WORKSHOP WITH CLAUDIA CASTELLUCCI

A Dance Seminar to the Sound of Bells

Claudia Castellucci, co-founder of the Italian theatre company Socìetas Raffaello Sanzio, came to Iran to develop The Wave Treatment, a workshop combining dance, gesture, rhythm, and listening.

Castellucci, whose work has long been concerned with the relationship between movement, rhythm, philosophy, and theatrical practice, founded Scuola Tetrica della Discesa in the late 1980s, an educational experience situated between philosophy and theatre. She has also written extensively on theatrical practice and contributed to several of Romeo Castellucci’s productions.

The Wave Treatment is built around rhythm and the different moments of the day. At its centre is the sound of bells and the interval between one sound and another: the silence that follows a sound, the memory of a sound that continues after it has disappeared, and the new sounds that emerge as it moves through space.

The dancers work between beats and pauses, responding to the sound of bells through movement and the use of a stick. Rather than following a fixed musical structure, the workshop explores how different rhythms can emerge from the accumulation, dispersion, and resonance of sound.

The lingering sound of the bells creates a space in which presence and memory meet. Different sequences of sound and movement overlap and produce unexpected coincidences, allowing the dancers to approach rhythm as a form of learning.

The workshop culminates in a public presentation on its final day.
